Earth Hour Philippines 2010 - How much did I save last night?

It was my first time to participate in this activity since it started in 2007 in Sidney Australia. It was a good thing the Barangay Officials went around to remind everybody of the event, not everyone participated though, or should I say, not everyone cared enough. Well, lots of people still do not know what is happening around even if it is already happening in front of their eyes.

So how much did I save? Not much. With only very few lights and appliances at the house, I would say only about 2 to 3 pesos, maybe less. You too can estimate your savings. Here is how you can do it:

1. Find your appliances' or lights' kW rating on the appliance plate usually located at the back.
2. Add the kW rating of all appliances and lights turned off during the Earth Hour.
3. Multiply to 1 hour and you get total kWh saved.
4. Check your electric bill to estimate the cost per kWh. You may estimate cost/kWh by dividing your bill by the total kWh consumed. You should get around 8 to 9 pesos per kWh or at least near these amounts.
5. Multiply result of number three by what you get in number 4.

Mathematically, your savings should be

• Money Saved = Total kW * Hours Turned Off * Cost Per kWh

And your cost per kWh should be

• Cost Per kWh = Bill Amount / kWh Consumed

So how much did you save? Probably not enough to justify an hour of darkness, risking mosquito bites outside, and missing Pilipinas Got Talent on TV.

Well, the Earth Hour is not about saving money at all. It is about making a statement to the whole world (including your unaware neighbors) and to the leaders of countries throughout the planet that we as individuals and businesses are willing to contribute in saving the Earth. Lessons from a First Time Home Buyer

Just reserved my first real property about a month ago. It took about 2 years, a dozen of agents and brokers, and a lot of learning before finally landing on that decision. It was a really tough ride with a variety of agents from the start to finish. In the end, I researched things myself and finally got what I wanted.

Here is a list of what I learned:

1. Choose your agent well. Many agents would get you to trippings and show you what they wanted you to buy, but not necessarily what you need or wanted. It would seem difficult but you should try to find an agent who understands that the reason he/she gets commissions from what you buy is because he/she is helping you find you what you want or need. There is no such thing as a free lunch, one has to add in value in return. Evey body works as they say.

2. Buy a scaled map to get a good grasp of the location. Never trust location maps in developer's flyers as they seem to always make landmarks and cities closer to their projects. You may also take advantage of online maps. Two of which have helped me a lot are as follows:

• Wikimapia
• Google Maps

Nevertheless, the hard printed maps available in National Bookstore or at SM's Kultura Filipino still proves handy. By the way, most Metro Manila Maps already includes part of Cavite specially Bacoor and Imus areas. So if you have a Metro Manila Map, you probably do not need to buy another one for the Cavite area.

3. If you are a commuter, choose locations based on accessibility to public transport, not on distance alone. There maybe housing developments that are close to where you work but are only accessible to tricyles. A 500-meter tricycle ride could cost more than a 5-kilometer ride on an air-conditioned bus. In the long run, you will end up unnecessarily spending more on your transportation cost, unless you are planning to get your own transport in few years time.

4. Be honest when it comes to your capacity to pay. Some buyers would manipulate their payslips or certificates of employment just so they can become eligible for a higher loan amount. This is just too risky. Banks and financial institutions check on your payment capacity for your own benefits too. They do not want you to struggle financially later on. Do not feel bad if they tell you you are not eligible for a certain amount of loan. Believe me, it is for your own good.

5. Cheapest is not always best. If you find a property that is not selling, there are probably reasons why it is not selling. Watch out!

6. Learn some financial calculations. Excel is a good tool for this one. However, you can also make use of some loan and amortization calculators from the following sites:

• HGC Amortization Calculator

Also, if you have Landbank Internet Banking Account, they also have loan calculation feature inside. You may also check websites of other banks and financial institutions for these features..

6. Always check out for the developer's reputation. Search the internet, join forums, ask questions.

7. Do your own research. As I have mentioned in no. 1 above, the agents are there to help you. Use them as much as they are willing to help. However, it is always to your advantage if you keep yourself open to other sources of information. The internet is an infinite source of information nowadays. All you need to do is tap it.

Anne Curtis Wardrobe Malfunction - Damage Control

Wardrobe malfunction - ano yon? :)

Well, the story goes.... Anne was performing on-stage in Boracay on a sexy bikini when she accidentally exposed one of her breasts... the result? Of course!!! photos and videos suddenly flooded the net the way Ondoy flooded the entire metropolitan...

What should Anne's camp do? Nothing! Why? Simply because there is virtually nothing that could be done about it. Hitting back at those who scattered those photos or videos will only make things worse. Actually, it is very much like running after a snake that bit you... it will only drive the poison to your heart.... So let it go, choose your reactions well and let time do its magical healing powers. You have done nothing wrong so there is no need to explain and hitting back will be completely pointless.

Earthquake in Manila?

They say it was 6.1 but how come I did not feel anything? I'm in the 17th floor!!! Oh, I was having my lunch break during that time so I was probably in the fast food, on my way back to the office, or in the elevator. Nevertheless, if it was 6.1, I should have felt the quake in any of these places. Wait!... can you feel a 6.1 earthquake when you are in an elevator? Hmmm...

Googled the news immediately and found out it was only intensity 3 here in Makati. So I was probably in the street or in the moving elevator when the earthquake occurred. It is hard to feel an intensity 3 earthquake in the ground level, right? By the way, according to ABS-CBN news the center of the quake is located about 100 miles west of Batangas, probably that is where the earthquake is at intensity 6.1.

My Old Blog - My Old Self

I was browsing through my old e-mail accounts and found out I still have this blog that I left out about 2 years ago. I skimmed through the blog posts and couldn't help smiling how young I was when I started this blog. Not so much younger in age, since it was only 2 years ago... but young in terms of maturity.... I felt I am already 10 years older when it was actually only 2 years ago. The first posts look like I was a trying hard profession-saver hoping that people who matters would read my blog and take actions based on it. My honest opinion for now is that it looks like I was only whining and couldn't help smile at it.

I was trying to blame everyone else, the university people who came up with the agricultural engineering course, the older agricultural engineers who could not help me find a glamorous job before, my classmates and jobless agricultural engineering colleague who do not have the same views as me :) ... I was blaming everybody.... in fact, I was angry... not realizing that everything that happened to me were all fruits of my own decisions and actions. Whew! What a life in a two-year journey!!! :)

Now is the time to laugh at yesterday's problems... time to move on... haha!

A market-driven engineering curriculum

Last weekend, presidents, CEOs, and GMs from the top 20 semiconductor companies (including Hitachi, Intel, Texas Instruments, etc.) in the Philippines visited the chancellor of UPLB and proposed that the engineering curriculum be modified according to the needs of the market. The semiconductor industry represent more than 50% of the Philippines' export income, have more than 40,000 employees of which about 5-10% are engineers. It was their findings that new engineers still need significant trainings before being able to do actual jobs, in short, newly grad engineers are not ready. The chancellor agreed only to add or modify at most 8 units and not the entire curriculum.

The one thing that the agricultural engineering community could learn from here is not "we are not alone" but a new approach towards creating a solution to the number 1 problem of agricultural engineers, that is, very thin job opportunity. Maybe it is time to have collaboration between agricultural engineers and our target market: the DA, agricultural companies (San Miguel, Purefoods, Bounty, etc.), LGUs, etc.. It would be a big step if we could have a consultancy meeting with these companies and government agencies on whether they really need agricultural engineers and what skills or services they need. Based on this consultation, we may modify our curriculum or provide the necessary trainings for existing agricultural engineers.

Rice Crisis in the Philippines - Temporary Solutions

Rice crisis again? Now everybody is blaming the farmers for not planting rice, the government for not supporting the farmers, the Chinese-Filipino palay buyers and millers for manipulating the farm-gate prices, or the rice traders who have been either caught or suspected hoarding rice. Now this is where the problem originates. We are now currently in crisis and people are either blaming each other or lately addressing long-term solutions when the crisis is already in our kitchens. Is this problem really unpredictable months or at least a year before it occur? Will the P5 billion grant or subsidy to rice farmers released by PGMA solve our problem that is already in our table?

Short Term Problem
Logistically, rice crisis can be predicted months before it occur and solutions could have been addressed months before. We should at least be prepared for this kind of events. Obviously, we do not have accurate forecasting methods, if there is any forecast at all.

Short Term Solutions
It seems that it is already too late to address the root causes of this problem. GMA's subsidy to rice farmers of P5 billion will not have results right away. It would probably take 1 to 2 years before we can feel its effects, if ever the money would even reach our farmers at all. There is not much we can do for now other than prepare ourselves to have major lifestyle changes in the next 1 to 2 years.

I remember way back in the 90s when we also experienced this same crisis. We survived through the crisis by adopting to it. Yes, we adjusted our needs by going into some alternative food sources:

1. Shifting to white corn grits. In the Visayas, esp in the provinces of Leyte and Cebu, corn grits were always a part of some people's staple food even during normal times. To many of us who were not used to eating rice, we gradually include a portion of corn grits in our diets so we could reduce our rice consumption. During those times, the price of corn grits was only about half to that of rice.

2. Including Banana (Saba) in your diet. The poor families in the provinces always inlcude banana as major part of their meals at least once a day. However, many average families in the province still enjoy eating saba with bagoong from time to time especially at picnic times during summer. This may not be applicable to Manila folks but would probably help reduce our national rice demand.

3. Potato / Camote and other root crops. This root crop has been said to have more nutrients than rice. I am not a nutritionist so I opt not to elaborate on that. Be careful though, because if you are not used to eating potato, your digestive system will turn into a biogas system - oh, a free substitute for LPG if you can collect them all :-). Kidding aside, mashed potato at fastfood are way too expensive than rice. But if you have access to the countryside, they are almost given away for free. There are lots of other rootcrops that can be an alternative to rice. Just a little sacrifice and we will all get through all these.

4. Burgers / Pandesal / Pancit. Finally, one that is readily available to Manila folks. We can actually reduce our rice consumption by shifting towards these kinds of foods. Burgers may still be more expensive than rice today, but it has been forecasted that rice would peak to more than P60 per kilo in the next two years. So go ahead and do your own cost analysis. Let us just hope the price of flour will not race up with that of rice.

5. Look at the positive side of this crisis. Remember that our rice diet has been one of the major causes of obesity and many carbohydrate related ailments in the Philippines. So think again, this might be a reminder for us to watch our diets. We can actually survive through this crisis just by being diet-conscious :-).

So there you go. Just a little sacrifice. Hopefully everything will get back to normal soon. Just hold on while the government is trying to compensate for its failures.

The Agricultural Worker's Dilemma

When I was in college, there were older people who teased me for taking an agricultural course. They said I was studying in UP just to "daru" (plow the fields using a carabao). Some of them even told me that I am wasting my time taking agricultural course from UP and that I should have taken Law or Medicine to make the most out of the rare chance of entering this prestigious university. Some of them were people I respected as a young man that time so I was put into a dilemma as early as my first year in college.

This dilemma went deeper when I graduated college. Out of those who made it through the barrier exam, or board exam as it is popularly known, only 1 out of 10 could get a decent agricultural engineering job, others settle for non-engineering jobs while few choose to stay jobless for years rather than being hired as low-grade engineers. Quite frustrating for one who made sacrifices for 5 or more years.

In a jeepney ride during college, I overheard a civil engineering student saying that agricultural engineering is not an easy course because thermodynamics is not an easy thing to digest. I would say it is a psychologically difficult career rather than a mind boggling college course.

I then worked with a feeds manufacturing company for almost 2 years and was not given a single engineering assignment during my tenure. I then worked with a consulting firm conducting feasibility studies on agricultural projects. With these short work experiences, I learned that workers are categorized as "agricultural" and "non-agricultural". Agricultural workers are always paid about 25% less than their counterparts in other industries. Even agricultural professionals were paid less than their counterparts in other industries and were actually expected to settle for a lower standard of living since they are usually hired and located in remote rural areas.

It finally dawned on me that the average Filipino looks down at agricultural workers and professionals as 3rd-class income citizens and that it would take real education to change this point of view. It became clear to me why farmers and fishermen do not want their children to be in their line of jobs; and that they look at their jobs as only for the less educated.

Eto lang ang masasabi ko...Compared sa number of examinees (between xavier and UP), that is 13 and 40,respectively, super laki ang difference. Considering that condition and statistically speaking, malamang mas may magfafail na examinee sa UP. I don't feel na dahil sa UP education deterioration kaya 88% lang ang pumasa. Sa tingin ko, there must be wrong with the examination coverage at sa type ng exam. Ibang-iba to what i've expected. Regarding sa issue kung sino ba ang best university for AgEng course, of course UP pa din. You're comparing Xavier and UP in terms of passing rate. Can you please compare also the list of top 10 examinees? Eight spots were from UPLB, and Xavier? I think, there should be another category for classifying top performing schools like >10, >20, >30 examinees.

You see, the content of this article does not fit the title. The title should be "XU dethroned UPLB in the 2007 AE Board Exam" since it's what this article was all about.

BTW, although there was a "ranking", we all know it's not absolutely a "No.1", "No.2" or whatever rank it is. The passing rate of UPLB and XU are incomparable because of the very large difference of the number of examinees (sample size, stat) from these institutions. So I just wonder why give so much emphasis on it in this article. However, if we are truly to compare the UP Education with other schools, you should have considered into your comparison the result of the Top 10 performing examinees where 8 out 13 examinees came from UPLB. If there's a "probable deterioration" in the UP Education, how come after 15 years, UP got the top 1 spot again? It's like saying we're good because the rest are incompetent. Come on. A lot of people especially the AE community of different schools would get hurt with your opinion.

Anyway, thanks for congratulating and saluting us although it seems like its only for XU. Hehehe..

Thank you for these comments. I could not agree more when you say that UP still is the the best university, in fact, not only in agricultural engineering, but perhaps, in any academic field. I would, however, admit that this is a "motherhood" statement. All of us would say that our universities or schools is the best the same way a mother would praise her son. Based on the number of examinees, it is the PRC and the Board who categorized which universities or schools should be included in the ranking. As far as I know, XU qualified to be included in the ranking since they have more than 10 examinees. We can make new categories, say, above 30 examinees or number of examinees who made it to the top 10, and make UPLB still no. 1 for 2007. But with respect to the PRC and the Board, despite of the series of controversies that it faced, I could only base my humble opinions on what they have published, no more no less.

Chances of Getting a Reasonable Job as Agricultural Engineers - less than 20%

About 3 months ago, I was playing with some of the features available in this blog. I created a poll asking this question: "What are the chances of an agricultural engineer in getting a reasonable job in the Philippines?." I got about 35 responses. Five percent answered very good, 8% answered good, 8% were neutral, 25% answered bad, and, as expected, 51% answered very bad. Not a good news for Philippine Agricultural Engineering job seekers. The question was particular only to the Philippines since I heard that agricultural engineers have better chances in many other countries.

I really could not tell the exact implications of these figures. It truly is not easy to summarily conclude that only agricultural engineers have very low chances of getting a reasonable job in this country. It could be that this really is the situation of the entire Philippine job market and not only to the agricultural engineering profession, that is, very low chances of getting a reasonable job whatever profession or specialty you might have. However, I also got hints that, of all engineering professions in the Philippines, agricultural engineers have the least chances of getting a reasonable job. Based on popular opinions, this is probably true.

I just hope this long-time issue will be addressed and answered during the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Week this coming April 2008.

The Rogue Assassin

When I first see the trailers of this movie about ayear ago, the title was "War", that's all. I wondered why they changed it into "Rogue Assassin." It was war because it is about "war" between two notorious Asian mob, the Triads and the Yakuza, that is being triggered by an assassin. Maybe they changed the title because "war" does not have the necessary appeal to attract audience and it sounds unfit to the plot and focus of the story. War might be an overdescription about the movie. The movie is more focused on the assassin, not on the conflict between the two gangs, probably the reason why "Rogue Assassin" sounds more fit.

For those who have not seen the movie yet, here is a short spoiler. If you don't want me to spoil your entertainment, stop reading at this point. :-) ...... Hmmmm... so you are really interested huh... Here it is:

An FBI agent, Jack Crawford, becomes personal about hunting the assassin of his partner. Three years after the death, traces of the Rogue appeared in a series of crimes. The assassin has no identity except only that he is known as the Rogue, maybe because of his tendency to turn against his bosses. Being unknown, having the supreme killing power, and driven by his supreme objective only him is aware of, the Rogue is now making frenzy about killing members of both the Triads and Yakuza, triggering the bloody war between the two crime organizations. It turned out the Rogue was......a former operative of the Black Briar Project of the CIA. He took matters into his own hands seeking revenge to those responsible for the death of his wife and child. Of course, that was before Jason Bourne found out his own true identity and exposed the project. But by this time, the Rogue has already made a new identity not known to his bosses in the CIA.

I really do not want to spoil somebody's entertainment so I made a slight twist here. My own twist. :-)

Agricultural Engineering Board Exam 2007

"The tables have turned", so announced Cherie Fae P. Ancheta and Gerald A. Tarampi of Xavier University. Perhaps this is the first time in the history of Philippine Agricultural Engineering that UP Los Baños, should I say, is toppled from the top place. Xavier University has grabbed the top place with 92% passing rate (12 of 13) from UP Los Baños with 88% (35 out of 40).

Most Agricultural Engineers, not only those from UP but also including those from other universities, would react to this year's result with "what happened?". In fact, this is the first time that the ranking of schools has been talked about. In the previous years, UP Los Baños has dominated the top place in terms of passing rate that it became the default school for "No.1", that is, when there is no announcement what school ranks first, people would automatically assume that it is UP Los Baños. Not anymore, it seems.

Glorious for XU, alarming for UP. But looking at the wider perspective, this result is actually good for the entire Philippine Agricultural Engineering. Xavier is actually doing UP a favor by giving a good competition. In the past years, there has been a probable deterioration in UP Education which was covered by lack of competition. UP could conveniently lower its standards and still rank no.1 because no.2 is way far behind. But the tables have turned indeed. Gone are the days when "there were only two universities in the Philippines." Now there seems to be 3!.

Congratulations to both UP and XU! I wish for a more tighter competition in the years to come!

Which boxes are empty?

This story was told by one speaker during the 2003 Oath Taking of new agricultural engineers. Unfortunately I forgot the name of that speaker.

A soap manufacturing company was having problem regarding empty soap boxes that were dispatched out of the facility. The empty boxes that passed through the manufacturing line occured frequently that it alarmed the company management. They then invited engineers and inventors to find solution to this problem.

An electrical engineer came and presented a technologically advanced scanning device. The device was designed to see through the boxes and thereby determine whether a box is empty or not. The members of the board were amazed by the technology and were even more amazed when the engineer presented the price of the device. Too expensive!!!

Next, a mechanical engineer came and presented a weighing scale which could be installed at some point in the conveyor lines. Much simpler! Empty boxes should weigh less, however, considering the modifications required for the conveyor lines in order to install the equipment, the cost is still too expensive overall.

Finally, an agricultural engineer came in... and to the committee's amazement, he brought in nothing at all. All he did was demonstrate to the committee how light empty soap boxes can be blown away using an electric fan.

The Difference Between a Scientist and an Engineer

I once heard this story during a lecture of a great agricultural engineer who obviously was my idol way back in college. Here it goes:

During a convention, an engineer and a scientist, who actually was a mathematician, were a having a small talk along the corridor. They then a noticed a beautiful lady on the opposite side of the corridor. Being the typical gentlemen that most engineers are, the engineer asked the scientist: "If you are standing exactly 2 meters away from that lady, how many steps do you need to take in order for your lips to touch the lips of that lady on the condition that every step you take is exactly one-half the distance of the step that you have previously made?"

The scientists took a few a seconds thinking and then answered: "Impossible! That is ASSYMPTOTIC, on that condition, you can only get nearer and nearer to that lady but you can never touch her!"

The engineer, who was actually an agricultural engineer, grinned and said: "Oh! Three steps! All I need is three steps and the EXPANSION DUE TO HEAT BUILD UP will cover the remaining distance."

Let's walk the talk

Okay, this so-called "BS Agricultural Engineering" course has ruined many engineering dreams, or at least, hinders career growth. Now what?

A few days ago I received an e-mail from one of the few readers of this blog. It says 'enough for the negative publicity about agricultural engineering'. What is important now is to know what to do. Hundreds of high school graduates will then be lured into this trap, fresh BSAE graduates are now spending considerable amount of money for their licensure exam this month, and even more old graduates, licensed on non-licensed, are now struggling for job that could at least gain them independence from parents and relatives. I have been trying to think of some options to address this issue. Here is a list of what I came up with:

1. Abolish Agricultural Engineering from all colleges and universities in the Philippines. This sounds like a summary execution but this is only an option.

2. Name change. I have worked with quite a number of engineers for 5 years and yet I have not met one who could understand thermodynamics and heat transfer better than agricultural engineers do. I have met electrical engineers who are good in engineering economics but, in general, not as good as agricultural engineers. I also suppose only agricultural engineers can explain "humidity" to a layman farmer. If you say you are an agricultural engineer, would anyone believe that you understand all these things?

3. Agricultural engineers should be allowed to take the licensure exams of other engineering degrees. This would be similar to the case of BS Agricultural Chemistry. Ag Chem is a 5-year course but their licensure exam is that of BS Chem, a 4-year course. For ag engs, maybe those who specialize in irrigation and drainage engineering or agricultural structures should be allowed to take the CE licensure exam, probably with the requirements of some additonal courses. For machinery majors, maybe a few more courses to make them eligible for the ME licensure exam, and so on and so forth. The results would be agricultural engineers with CE or ME license or licensed CE specialized in irrigation and drainage engineering or agricultural structures. Perhaps an ME specialized in agricultural machinery or processing. Just my wild thoughts.

4. Curriculum change. Maybe we should bring back the days when agricultural engineering was just one of the majors in BS Agriculture. Maybe the curriculum change could make the lives of agricultural engineering students reasonably easier. They should have better career chances as agriculturists rather than "improvised engineers".

These are only my wild thoughts. I know that there brainy and/or more experienced people out there who have better ideas. I would appreciate it very much if you could post your thoughts as comments or replies to this blog.

5 years into the career trap

I am beginning to view agricultural engineering as a career trap; five years for the good ones, 6 on the average, while up to 10 years for the most devoted ones. :). Most students who took/are taking this degree are usually those who want to help this so-called agricultural country, improve the lives of our ever-poorest farmers, and are usually been exposed to the countryside environment at least once in their life. They are the ones who believe that farmers are still the backbone of the country, though not anymore it seems. They are the most adventurous and creative ones.

I remember when I was still a student I imagine myself driving an air conditioned and fully digital tractor with GPS tracking system. Sometimes even tilling a field with a remote controlled tractor or operating a fully automated piggery or livestock farm. Well, all these now belong to the IT guys, but I will have that in another story.

Where are we now? Stucked in the rut! Unemployed, discouraged workers giving up hope looking for job, new graduates in call centers, taking up other courses, machine operators working abroad, and many other sad stories. The most prestigious, I think, are those who have gone into teaching and research jobs. There are very few who are into engineering, though non-agricultural, but are paid way below their conterparts from other engineering fields.

Serving the country? Not realistic! One can not serve other people on an empty stomach. In my case, maybe I will practice agricultural engineering as a hobby later on, not as an income generating career.

I have worked with engineers from other fields, and, in my judgment, our advantage in terms of the use of engineering principles and knowledge is very much apparent. My problem is that I am trapped. Right now, my goal is to get off this career trap; maybe change my title, just the title.

Does it matter if you are licensed or not?

Based on my own experience, no. Based on other agricultural engineers' experiences, still no. It really does not matter if you have passed the board exam or not.

I only know three ways you can go after finishing your agricultural engineering degree. First, which is the most common, work as an employee (probably not as an engineer). Second, start your own business or till your father's farm. Thirdly, despair that you took agricultural engineering at all (because nobody wants to hire you as an engineer).

Are you expecting that the license of an agricultural engineer will have the same function as those of lawyers or civil engineers? Do you expect that you can sign and put your seal on engineering plans and designs after earning your agricultural engineering license?
